Ready, Set, Conserve — Energy Conservation Program

Simply adjust your thermostat and avoid high-electricity usage appliances, and you’re all set.

Helping your neighbors and the grid is right at your fingertips with the Ready, Set, Conserve program. All you do is manually adjust your thermostat by 2-3° and refrain from high-electricity usage for a specified time window — and you’ve done your part to conserve.

With Ready, Set, Conserve, you won’t be caught off guard. When the time comes to conserve, you’ll be notified, by either email or text, a day in advance. No special equipment is needed to participate — just the willingness to adjust your routine for the greater good of conservation.

By participating, you help:

  • Reduce the risk of power loss and the need to use additional coal plants.
  • Reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere by lightening the load on the grid.
  • Your neighbors and the grid when it’s needed the most.

How it works:

During Ready, Set, Conserve events, you’ll be alerted via email or text message, a day in advance, to upcoming periods of high-electricity demand so you can reduce your usage and adjust your thermostat.

Be alerted about upcoming events immediately when you sign up for text alerts.

Ready, Set, Conserve.

Ready, Set, Conserve is a part of a trio of solutions in our Ready, Set, Green program. With Ready, Set, Conserve, all you have to do is adjust the temperature on the thermostat in your home by 2-3° and hold off on high-usage activities during periods of high-electricity demand or extreme temperatures.

Green Mountain Energy will send you program information via email.  You’ll be alerted to upcoming periods of high-electricity demand so you can reduce your usage. During high-demand hours, simply adjusting your thermostat and holding off on high-usage activities like running the dishwasher, washer, dryer or pool pump can help with reducing demand.

No, you do not have to enroll in the program. As a Green Mountain Energy customer, you will automatically receive emails alerting you to high electricity demand events or extreme temperatures.

One day in advance of the event.

Nothing. Participating is easy. All you need to do is manually adjust your thermostat and refrain from high-usage activities. No special thermostat or equipment is required.

Oftentimes, the situations are unexpected (for example, a significant change in weather forecast or an unplanned outage of generation), so we usually have only one day of advance notice. This means we can’t send an event notice two or three days before an event, because we cannot tell that far in advance that a usage reduction will be needed. A usage reduction request is sent when we anticipate that demand for electricity will be high compared to the amount of available generation.

Here are a few ways:

  • If you have a swimming pool, turn off the pump during the reduction period.
  • Postpone using your washer or dryer until after the reduction period.
  • During a reduction period, use a microwave oven— which is a lower-electricity usage appliance — instead of a stovetop or conventional electric oven.
  • Postpone charging your electric vehicle until after the reduction period.
