Biodigester/waste-to-water system and express electric vehicle charging system
The new Food Hub will be the largest in the country, dedicated to supporting family farms and increasing access to fresh, healthy food in underserved neighborhoods.
Created in 1970, GrowNYC is the largest and most established community-based environmental nonprofit in New York City and provides assistance to 3 million New Yorkers each year. GrowNYC is growing and building a new 75,000-square-foot New York State Regional Food Hub (“The Hub”), which will aggregate and distribute regionally grown farm products throughout the city with a focus on servicing institutional buyers in underserved communities.
“The Hub” is a $30 million project made possible through support by many organizations, including the State of New York, New York City Council, NYC Economic Development Corporation and the Federal Economic Development Agency. Sun Club is one of those supporters, donating $150,000 toward an interior biodigester/waste-to-water system and an express electric vehicle charging station.
The interior biodigester/waste-to-water system will manage all the facility’s organic waste onsite by converting it into water that can be disposed of using existing municipal wastewater systems. This system eliminates the need to transport waste to a landfill while also avoiding the associated methane from organic waste decomposition. This digester can process 50 pounds of food scraps per hour.
The second half of Sun Club’s donation will be used to install an express electric vehicle charging station, which will allow GrowNYC’s existing electric vehicle delivery trucks and employee vehicles to recharge quickly onsite, thus dramatically reducing the emissions associated with their local produce deliveries.
