Project Overview

Willow Waterhole Greenspace Conservancy was established because of the perseverance of residents to protect the area since 2005. From its humble beginnings as an initial flood detention project, later transforming into a beautiful greenspace and park, its success and increasing popularity are owed to public and private partnerships, with new enhancements taking place in just the last 5 years. This greenspace effectively mitigates 100% of significant rain events impacting over 50,000 Houstonians living in its immediate 3-mile radius.

Willow Waterhole now combines 608 million gallons of stormwater detention into six lakes and boasts 291 acres of greenspace, which includes 35 acres of wetlands and a 15-acre native coastal prairie preserve. The Green Mountain Energy Grove along the Cullen Foundation Trail, a series of 15 native loblolly pine trees, provides information on the significant role trees have in cleaning the air in our urban environment.

Today, the Conservancy operates its maintenance equipment and on-site transportation fleet 100% emissions-free thanks to a $108,847 sustainability grant that helps avoid using 300 gallons of fuel annually and prevent 6,000 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
