How can I apply for a critical customer or load designation?

Applying for a critical customer or load designation?

Here’s what you should know:

Certain customers may be eligible to apply for the following designations based on their medical status or the nature of their business:

Critical Care Residential Customer: A residential customer who has someone permanently residing in their home that has been diagnosed by a physician as being dependent upon an electric powered medical device to sustain life.

Chronic Condition Residential Customer: A residential customer who has someone permanently residing in their home who has been diagnosed by a physician as having a serious medical condition that requires an electric-powered medical device or electric-powered device or electric heating or cooling to prevent impairment of a major life function through a significant deterioration or exacerbation of the person’s medical condition.

Critical Load Public Safety Customer: A non-residential customer for whom electric service is considered crucial for the protection or maintenance of public safety, including but not limited to hospitals, police stations, fire stations, and critical water and wastewater facilities.

Critical Load Industrial Customer: An industrial customer for whom an interruption or suspension of electric service would create a dangerous or life-threatening condition on the retail customer’s premises.

You can apply for the applicable designation, which affords certain protections. Please contact Green Mountain at 1-866-785-4668 for more information.

Critical Care Residential Customer and Chronic Condition Residential Customer designations require an application your physician completes and submits to your Transmission and Distribution Service Provider on your behalf. Critical Load Public Safety Customer and Critical Load Industrial Customer designations require you to complete an application with your TDSP:

Please note that these statuses do not guarantee an uninterrupted, regular, or continuous power supply. If electricity is a necessity, the customer must make arrangements for on-site backup capabilities or other alternatives in the event of loss of electricity service.

What are RECs? (Renewable Energy Certificate)

Green-e Energy Long Renewable Energy Certificate (REC)

Disclosure Your purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) supports renewable electricity production in the region of generation. A REC represents the environmental benefits of 1 megawatt hour (MWh) of renewable energy. For every unit of renewable electricity generated, an equivalent amount of RECs is produced, and by purchasing and pairing RECs with your electricity service you are using and receiving the benefits of that renewable electricity. Your REC purchase also helps build a market for renewable electricity. Increased demand for, and generation of, renewable electricity helps reduce conventional electricity generation in the region where the renewable electricity generator is located. It also has other local and global environmental benefits which may include emitting little or no regional air pollution or carbon dioxide.

The RECs in a Green-e Energy certified product are verified and certified by Green-e Energy, and the seller of a Green-e Energy certified product is required to disclose the quantity, type and geographic source of each certificate. Please see the Product Content Label provided by your REC supplier for this information. Green-e Energy also verifies that the renewable energy certificates are not sold more than once or claimed by more than one party. For information on Green-e Energy please visit its website, www.green-e.org.

What is Renewable Energy?

Energy sources that are either inexhaustible (solar, wind, geothermal) or replenished over a short period of time (hydro, biomass) are considered renewable. Natural gas and coal, for example, are not renewable because their use consumes gas and coal reserves at a much quicker rate than they can be replenished. Nuclear is not derived from fossil fuels but has negative environmental impacts like harmful radioactive waste byproducts.

Learn more about renewable energy like wind and solar.

What is Cleaner Electricity?

Most people aren’t aware that the traditional generation of electricity is the leading cause of industrial air pollution in the U. S. and creates more CO2 than any other sector.

“Cleaner electricity” is from generation sources that produce little to no air pollution (carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) and/or radioactive waste, especially when compared to traditional sources of electric generation (i.e., coal and nuclear).   Sources of cleaner electricity include wind, solar power, biomass, geothermal and hydropower.

What are Carbon Offsets?

Carbon offsets are investments in projects that reduce or avoid carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. After individuals or businesses try to directly reduce their emissions as much as possible, they can purchase carbon offsets to balance out any emissions that are still remaining, bringing their overall carbon footprint down to zero. Learn more about Carbon Offsets.

What is LEED?

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is an internationally recognized green building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Visit LEED 101 for more information.

What is the EPA Green Power Partnership?

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that supports the purchase of green power by businesses and organizations. Learn more about the EPA Green Power Partnership program and Green Mountain customers who participate.
