How do SolarSPARC plans work?

Where does the solar power is SolarSPARC plans originate?

When you sign up for a SolarSPARC plan, Green Mountain will purchase and retire renewable energy certificates (RECs) representing the environmental attributes associated with U.S. solar or wind energy generation for 100% of your paid usage, with the percentage of solar and wind depending on the content of the SolarSPARC plan you select. Solar content percentage varies by plan. The SolarSPARC 10 plan uses at least 10% solar energy and up to 90% wind energy, while the SolarSPARC 100 plan uses 100% solar energy. For details, see the contract documents for the plan you select.

What are the differences between the SolarSPARC 100 and SolarSPARC 10 plans?

Our goal is to offer innovative renewable electricity plans that fit your needs. For that reason, SolarSPARC is available in a 100% solar option (SolarSPARC 100) as well as an option made from at least 10% solar and at most 90% wind energy (SolarSPARC 10). Depending on which market you live in, the monthly contribution to the Green Mountain solar fund differs:

  • In Texas: The monthly amount set aside for the Green Mountain solar fund amount and the annual bill credit are the same for both the SolarSPARC 100 and the SolarSPARC 10 plans.
  • In our markets outside of Texas: The SolarSPARC 100 plan includes a higher monthly contribution from Green Mountain toward the Green Mountain solar fund. The more affordably priced SolarSPARC 10 plan lets you support solar with less of an investment.
How are SolarSPARC plans different from other solar energy plans?

In addition to the solar energy provided by a SolarSPARC plan, you will receive an annual credit that grows each consecutive year you’re enrolled in the plan. Green Mountain will also make a monthly contribution to the Green Mountain solar fund, which is used to support solar projects, programs and technologies.

Why should I sign up for a SolarSPARC plan?

By enrolling in one of our SolarSPARC plans, you help accelerate the adoption of solar energy AND get rewarded for it. Not only does a SolarSPARC plan provide a portion of your electricity using solar energy, it also helps fund efforts to make solar more affordable, effective and available. And as a thank you, you’ll get an annual credit that grows over time.

Why is the SolarSPARC plan a great alternative to putting solar panels on my home?

Many people are unable to “go solar” because they:

  • Do not own their homes
  • Reside in an apartment or other multifamily home
  • Have homes that are not good candidates for solar because of roof orientation, too much shade from trees or buildings, or limited space to accommodate a solar array
  • Have concerns about the upfront cost of a solar array

SolarSPARC allows you to utilize solar energy without installing rooftop solar.

How does the contribution to the Green Mountain solar fund work?

For every month you’re enrolled in SolarSPARC, Green Mountain will set aside a fixed amount to support the Green Mountain solar fund, which helps fund a variety of solar projects, programs and technologies. See the SolarSPARC electricity Terms of Service or Customer Disclosure Statement for details.

How does Green Mountain determine how the solar funds are used?

We consider all kinds of projects, programs and innovations that will help to accelerate the adoption of solar energy by making it more affordable, effective and available.

What solar projects has the Green Mountain solar fund supported in the past?

With support from the Green Mountain solar fund, more than 7,500 kW of residential solar has been installed across Texas. The fund has also supported solar installations at AMLI Residential, the Houston Food Bank and Texas Parks & Wildlife.
